How to Apply Window Film to Domestic and Commercial Windows

Beat the Heat (and the Cold) with DIY installation for your Home or Office.

Tinting your home’s or commercial windows will keep you cooler in summer and warmer in winter while saving you money on energy costs. Block out 70–99% of harsh UV, protecting both your interior furnishings and your skin from exposure damage. Increase safety and security from storms or accidental damage — any tinted glass is less likely to shatter and will remain attached to the film.

Tint with confidence with PolyFilm.

What You’ll Need

  • Soapy water solution in a spray bottle
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Sharp safety knife
  • Squeegee or hard card
  • Adhesive tape (for peeling backing liner)

Step 1: Pre-Clean the Window Thoroughly

  • Clean both sides of the glass with a soapy water solution.
  • Do not use household or ammonia-based cleaners.
  • Use a lint-free cloth to completely dry the surface.
  • Ensure the surface is free from dirt, grime, and residue.

Note: The film’s clear backing liner is slick. The tint side is slightly tacky (adhesive side).

Step 2: Trim Film to Rough Size

  1. Unroll the window film and identify the backing liner vs. tint film side.
  2. Lightly spray the window with soapy solution.
  3. Place the film on the window with the backing liner facing you.
  4. Trim the film to rough size, leaving a 10–25mm (1 inch) border.
  5. Use a sharp knife and pull away excess film carefully as you trim.

Note: Be careful not to scratch the glass or damage the window frame while trimming.

Step 3: Remove the Backing Liner

  1. While the film is still in place on the window, peel off the backing liner using adhesive tape on both sides of the film.
  2. Lightly spray the exposed adhesive side with soapy water.
  3. Wet your fingers to prevent fingerprints on the adhesive.
  4. Handle with care to avoid creases or contamination.
  5. Spray the interior window surface with soapy solution before applying.

Step 4: Apply the Film and Final Trimming

  1. Remove the film from the exterior and place it onto the interior window surface.
  2. Align it carefully with the adhesive side facing the wet glass.
  3. Lift the bottom edge slightly to prevent picking up dust or debris.
  4. Squeegee the film from the center out to hold it in place.
  5. Trim for a precise fit inside the window edges.
  6. Squeegee firmly from the center outward to remove air bubbles and soapy water.
  7. Wipe away excess moisture with a lint-free cloth.

Aftercare Tips

  • Cloudiness is normal right after installation — this will disappear as the film dries with sun or warmth.
  • Use a hard card to push out any remaining water or air bubbles to the edges.
